Time to send back the Health & Welfare migrants

First, let's be clear that our anger over immigration shouldn't be targeted at immigrants. If we learned that Dubai was paying £5k a week in welfare, with the best medical care in the world, to any who made it to her shores, many of us would be there like a shot. You can't blame the health and welfare immigrants to the UK for taking advantage of the opportunity offered to them. No, let's be clear - our anger must be reserved for the Labour Party and its 'open door' policy to all-comers that has changed the face of our nation.

And once we're clear that Labour's betrayal of the British people on immigration has rendered it unfit ever to hold office again, let's get on with sending back all Labour's economic migrants with as much humanity and dignity as we can afford. First, let's start with the Health Service. Unlawful free treatment for immigrants is costing scores of millions; so no treatment, no GP registration, to any non-EU citizens unless paid for in advance in full. And that includes all the Nigerian village girls clogging up the maternity ward here. They can have their babies in Abuja or Lagos.

Second, a 'combing out' of economic migrants living in Welfare housing, including all the Housing Association stock subsidised from tax. We can start with individual voter registration for this, but first we need to grasp the nettle and change the law to stop all Commonwealth citizens having the automatic right to register on the voting roll. Thousands of illegal overstayers are currently registered to vote, giving them access to bank accounts, welfare housing and benefits. The loss to British citizens of the reciprocal right of being able to vote in Burkino Faso or Tonga will be bearable.

Finally, the devolution to borough level in London of UK Border Agency search and seize teams. Here in Lewisham they could fill a deportation-charter A340 every week with very little effort. For the next five years at least, let's convert all those walking co-ordinators and safe-drinking advisors to UKBA squaddists and get them doing something useful.

Oh, and Cameron. We're all aware he only said what he said because there's some voting coming up, but if the man just for once actually took some action in support of his weasel words he might rescue just a smidgeon of credibility.

You're a flipping idiot.

Unlawful free treatment for immigrants

Everyone with a valid visa (except tourists) gets lawful free treatment. British citizens who do not live in the UK do not get free treatment.

to any non-EU citizens unless paid for in advance in full

Australians who live in the UK get free NHS treatment. Tourists also get free treatment because all British citizens in Australia are entitled to Medicare.

The same is true for certain countries including: Anguilla, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Barbados, Belarus, Bosnia, etc.

all the Nigerian village girls clogging up the maternity ward

If they can't show a British passport or a non-tourist visa, they will be asked to pay, unless they are going to die. I don't think most of those "village girls" are emergency cases. If they are pregnant and got a tourist visa it is the responsibility of the embassy in Nigeria to check this. The UKBA is supposed to not let them in if they suspect they have lied about not being pregnant. Also, if they are on tourist visas their kids will not be British despite being born here (unless the father has a non-tourist visa).

economic migrants living in Welfare housing

No economic migrants live in welfare housing. Only successful and pending asylum seekers do. The definition of economic migrant includes being able to afford your own house. If you get fired you leave the UK when your savings dry up.

stop all Commonwealth citizens having the automatic right to register on the voting roll

I can't support allowing Commonwealth citizens to vote but I don't see anybody trying to get this changed. I didn't hear a mention of this once during last year's GE.

Thousands of illegal overstayers are currently registered to vote

Probably right. Hundreds of thousands of legal migrants are also registered to vote.

giving them access to bank accounts, welfare housing and benefits

Rubbish. Anyone can get a bank account in the UK but they may not be allowed to reenter the country to use it. Just being registered to vote will not give you benefits. You also need a visa that doesn't say "no benefits". The only visas that doesn't say no benefits are given to asylum seekers and people who have stayed legally without benefits for 5 years. Claiming benefits before you are allowed to will invalidate your application for any future visas.

British citizens of the reciprocal right of being able to vote in Burkino Faso or Tonga

As far as I know, British citizens can't vote anywhere except in the EU. That's why I can't support allowing Commonwealth citizens to vote in the UK.

I'm an Aussie doctor in the UK. I will get deported in 2 years time because of Cameron's "cap" unless I get married. And I voted Tory thinking he would do something about all the bogus asylum seekers and people who settle legally then bring in 10 family members, who instantly get benefits and social housing.

Not so. Limited to emergency treatment only

Australians who live in the UK get free NHS treatment.

Limited to illness or injury occurring whilst in the UK - it doesn't cover expensive specialist treatment for existing long term chronic conditions like kidney disease

If they can't show a British passport or a non-tourist visa, they will be asked to pay,

Amazin just how many village girls get accidentally up the duff whilst doing a noddy NVQ in Buisiness Administration, isn't it?

No economic migrants live in welfare housing.

Oh yes they do - particularly in Housing Association flats. Just look at the addresses from which the UKBA seizes immigrants for deportation. There's also widespread illegal sub-letting of council flats.

Anyone can get a bank account in the UK

Anyone claiming to be resident in the UK won't get a bank account, store cards or many other services including utilities unless they're on the Electoral Register.

As far as I know, British citizens can't vote anywhere except in the EU.

Nearly every single Commonwealth nation has some sort of reciprocal voting arrangements with the UK. In Australia, any British or Commonwealth citizen resident before 1984 can register to vote in Australian elections. In NZ Commonwealth citizens are required by law to register to vote ...

I'm an Aussie doctor in the UK.

Jeez, I hope your clinical judgement's better than your knowledge of immigration.

@JuliaM - not true. he wants to get married just to stay in country. surely there is some penalty for intending to commit a crime.

he's also a flipping idiot himself. he voted Tory believing [cameron] was going to do something.

i would really like to know what he expected to done with people who settle legally. give them a prize? let them nominate arrogant aussie fools for deportation?
