Hungary nationalises cigarette sales

The war on smokers is very much part of Hungarian ruling party Fidesz's political creed of 'Home, family, work, health and order'. Health is not a personal option; if the State pays your healthcare costs, the argument goes, the State must also regulate your lifestyle. A draft law that would nationalise all of Hungary's tobacco outlets or kiosks and ration them to one per 2,000 population, leaving 5,000 - 6,000 State-run tobacco outlets across the country compared with the estimated 43,000 current private sales points, is due to take effect from the start of 2013.

However, Hungary being part of the EU, both the EU and other member nations may file objections to this kind of national law whilst in draft form; the consultation ended last week, and neither the EU nor a single European State filed any objection at all.

Be afraid.

Well ... Fidesz are a crypto-fascist party, and such guvmints tend twords crony capitalism with very big state/"private" corporations.
So one should expect this.
However, the non-objection for other EU states is very, err, interesting, don't you think?
Or did no-one notice?

The funniest thing about this is that Fidesz comes out of the collaboration between late communist dissidence and would-be yuppies in the late 1980's/early 1990's. I lived there at the time, and no self-respecting dissident would have been seen dead without a fag (preferably smuggled & foreign)and a black T-shirt.
Not going to make a real difference to fag sales though in a failing country where (of necessity) the 'black economy' accounts for around half of real economic activity.

I seem to remember reading one of your posts a little while back Raedwald, in which you waxed lyrical about the excellent price that one could their fags for in Hungary...

Something about a flight, a night and a couple of thousand? fags being cheaper than here ,just for the fags...

I think you should declare self interest here... :)

Other than that, I agree that such acts by government types are really worrying...

Fu**in' communitarians...

They are a cancer.

New York...

So good they named it twice...

Shame about my repeated comment though... It doesn't deserve repeating.

right writes; yep, and you can still buy them for £2 a pack. So long as you don't smoke them at a tram stop. Poland and Hungary have little choice but to maintain low fag tax when smuggling from Ukraine and Belorus at half the price is so easy.

I like Budapest; cheap beer, warm sun and the girls and buildings are pretty. And even though I should approve of the Fidesz agenda - it's got a lot in common with my own values - there's something a bit creepy about it. And Jobbik's hovering in the background doesn't help

F embrace the "values" of the fascist wing of the RC church (which is, admittedly, most of it).
Eugh.

What business is it of ours or of any other Member State to tell Hungary what to do?

None.

I strongly resent this business of national peoples taking national problems for Judgement by the euSSR. We really should refuse to participate-- we should rebel instead.

Overall, the system they pretend is natural is a cultural invader's way of taking power from People. We are voiceless because the Puppets in Place don't communicate with us; and we certainly have no recourse against the foreign eu arbitrators and law enforcers who pull the strings.

It's as disgusting as the nonsense of begging and pleading with "Petitions" --- to the pigs who should rightly serve our interests.

PS: I am, of course seeing the problem as applying to all those subjugated by the euSSR --- the issues are not limited to Hungary or to tobacco.
