'One Nation' explained

Labour 'One Nation'
To prevent the fracture of the nation into rich and poor, a powerful Labour central State will take money away from the rich and redistribute it to the poor

Conservative 'One Nation'
To prevent the fracture of the nation into rich and poor, a powerful Conservative central State will reduce taxes for the poor to make them richer

LibDem 'One Nation'
To prevent the fracture of the nation into rich and poor, a powerful LibDem central State will build new windmills in every constituency. Rich and poor will therefore be united in their opposition to windmills.

Disraeli 'One Nation'
To prevent the fracture of the nation into rich and poor, individuals should realise their personal moral obligation to others to ensure social stability. Although inequality is the natural human state, it is incompatible with self-centred individualism in a healthy society

Adam Smith 'One Nation'
The Butcher, the Brewer and the Baker act out of self interest alone. But as it is in their personal economic interest for their customers to be wealthy enough to buy their goods, they participate fully in civil society as school governors, founders of hospitals, undertakers of public health works, magistrates and so on.

Karl Marx 'One Nation'
Only the proletariat can form a single, united, homogenous class that transcends national boundaries. To prevent the fracture of the nation into rich and poor, the rich must be shot.

The EU's 'One Nation'

Nations are evil. There must be no nations - at least, no nations with any power.

All power must be vested in the EU Commission. It's for your own good.

Nazi Germany "One Nation"

One folk.

Sorry Raedwald, but that was all I could hear in my little head when I read about the rantings of "the Miliband Tendency"...

...Why don't these types just "go away" and leave us alone.

NB: I lurve the one about LibDims... However, that also applies to the other two gangs of shysters as well.

But don't forget whichever "One Nation" you end up living under it's always our politicial elite who make sure some of the money ends up in their pockets as it moves along the seesaw of life.

Very funny, but untrue.
Marx never suggested anything of the sort.
His flawed analysis of mid 19thC economics was the basis for his followers constructing (another) cruel bigoted and murderous religion, based on his supposed (& wrong) teachings - rather like someone from Nazareth, in fact!

Conservative One Nation - then - as you said (see "Harold Macmillan")
Conservative One Nation - now - unfortunatelly, the poor will get tuppence more in tax cuts, but the Bullingdon boys will get loadsamoney more ....
Agree re NulieBour, though!
Lem-o-Crat - actually, we'll cock it up so badly, that we will unite the entrire nation is our despite.

Can I have the Smith or Disraeli options please? The top 3 don't seem that much different. I wonder what Farage's "one nation" would look like?

Ah yes. The recently canonised St. Hobsbawm would agree with that, for sure.

Marx never said anything of the sort.
But the Mraxists did (& do)
SLIGHT difference.

For the last thirty years or more, most Tories, aspiring to the "One Nation" brand, have been Europhiles and should properly be called true believers in "No Nation" - along with the leaderships of the Labour and Lib-Dem parties.

At the big demonstration in Derby over the contract for railway carriages which went to Siemens and not Bombardier under "EU rules" , there was a big trade union/left wing presence.

One chap had a placard demanding nationalisation of Bombardier and the railways. I pointed out that there was not much point in doing that under a government of any party until we had first nationalised the government! He thought about it for a couple of seconds, his face lit up like a switched on lightbulb and he had a good laugh, agreeing with me.

Summing up:

"When the election comes you will all live under one nation"

"But I don't want to live under one nation"

"When the election comes you'll do as you're effng told"

Yes I know, but the old ones aren't necessarily wrong.

Greg,

Marx's chum, Engels, certainly thought that certain races should be made to disappear completely because they were insufficiently advanced to partake of the proletarian revolution.

He wrote an article about in the "Rhenische Zeitung" in 1848, Amongst those slated for this "Sonderbehandlung" were the Serbs - oh, and Scottish highlanders too!

I produced the article in evidence to a Marxist friend who wriggled like mad to deny that this was racist! It was splendid fun.

Arnold Schwarzenegger made a similar appeal for US national unity the other day. I may be paraphrasing, but it went something along the lines of the following:

"I want Democrats and Republicans to come together - and implement Democrat policies. Like on the environment and stem cell research. You know we don't have any more concentration camp prisoners to experiment on for the advancement of science. We have to get them early. Before they have faces. You know, like The Terminator tried to do to John Connor..."
