Is it time to get Calais back?

Not by force of course - but what about offering the Burghers of Calais a referendum, to join the Kingdom as an autonomous statelet with the status of Guernsey or Jersey - their own assembly responsible only to the Crown, free to set their own tax rates, grant banking licenses, register shipping and all the other lucrative little earners that make the Channel Islands so prosperous?

Free of the shackles of French socialism, the place would blossom ...

But they would have to accept all the Asylum Seekers because our stupid judges would insist.

The trouble with this idea is that we would end up with a situation like that of the Spanish footholds in Africa. Perhaps we could just buy the port and tunnel entrance areas. Surround them with razor wire and watchtowers with machine guns.

In fact, we just need to catch them as they land and send them back to France. Don't bother to ask them for their papers, just ship them back.

While they're all expanding eastwards --- dancing about with Obarmy and Nato... .... Their naysayers can quietly open up that side door. I luvvit.

Better idea. Accept all the asylum seekers with open arms, but issue a slight correction: Sorry guys, we don't give out free housing in England, or benefits to people who haven't paid any taxes, but form an orderly line and we'll give you all Megabus vouchers to speed you on your way to Glasgow...
